Short answer: dArkOS is Christian Haitian’s Debian-based rebuild of ArkOS. His official releases target devices such as the RG351MP, RGB10 and G350 — there is no dArkOS image made for the R36S or R36 Max. R36-family owners usually flash ArkOS4Clone, a community port that brings ArkOS to these handhelds and lets you choose your exact model and screen panel after flashing. A dArkOS version of that port exists but is still being tested. ROCKNIX is the main alternative.

Why “dArkOS for R36S” is confusing
ArkOS was the firmware most R36S owners flashed first, and dArkOS is its newer Debian-based successor, so it is natural to search for “dArkOS R36S”. But the R36S isn’t one of dArkOS’s official devices, and many videos use the name loosely for any ArkOS-based build. What R36S and R36 Max owners actually need is a build that includes the device tree (DTB) for their exact board and screen — which is what ArkOS4Clone provides.
Before you flash
- Back up the card your handheld came with. Make a full image of it with Win32 Disk Imager or a similar tool. It contains the configuration for your exact panel, and it is your way back if anything goes wrong.
- Identify your hardware. Many units sold as R36S are clones with different boards and screens. Our clone guide covers the checks, and ArkOS4Clone’s DTB Analysis Tool can read the DTB from your stock card to tell you which configuration to pick.
- Use a good microSD card. A reputable 64 GB or larger card avoids most “won’t boot” problems.
How to install ArkOS4Clone
- Open the ArkOS4Clone releases page on GitHub and download every part of the latest image (the files end in .7z.001, .7z.002 and so on). Extract them together with 7-Zip.
- Flash the extracted image to your microSD card with balenaEtcher or Rufus. Double-check the target drive — flashing erases it.
- On a Windows PC, run
dtb_selector.exefrom the flashed card and choose your device — for example an “origin” panel for a genuine R36S, or one of the three R36 Max types for an R36 Max. - Choose the battery driver version when prompted, safely eject the card, and boot the handheld. The first boot takes a few minutes while it sets up.
- Copy games you legally own into the matching system folders.
If the screen stays black or the controls behave oddly, you most likely picked the wrong configuration: run the selector again and try the next panel or type.
Which R36 Max do I have?
ArkOS4Clone lists three R36 Max hardware variants, and they aren’t reliably labelled on the box. Rather than guessing, use the DTB Analysis Tool on your stock card, or try the types in order — a wrong choice only affects that card, and your stock card still boots the device.
What about Wi-Fi?
The R36S and R36 Max have no built-in Wi-Fi. Community builds add drivers for some USB adapters (ArkOS4Clone’s September 2026 release added the RTL8723DU driver), so check the release notes before buying one. Everything else — games, BIOS files and ports — goes on the microSD card.

For an R36S or R36 Max, flash ArkOS4Clone and pick your device with the DTB selector. Watch for the dArkOS variant of the same project if you specifically want dArkOS.
