Short answer: the R36 Max and R36S use the same RK3326 chip with 1 GB of RAM, so they play the same games at the same speed. What changes is the screen โ a square 4-inch 720ร720 panel on the Max against a 3.5-inch 4:3 panel on the R36S โ plus a 4,000 mAh battery (vs 3,500 mAh) and a taller body. Buy the Max if you mostly play Game Boy, Game Boy Color or GBA, which look noticeably bigger on its square screen. For SNES, Genesis and PlayStation 1 the picture is about the same size on both, so the smaller R36S is the more sensible pick.

Performance: identical, because the chip is identical
Many listings describe the R36 Max as the faster model. It isn’t. Both use the RK3326 with a Mali-G31 GPU and 1 GB of RAM, so NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, GBA and most of the PlayStation 1 library run at full speed on both, while Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and PSP are game-by-game on both. A game that struggles on one struggles on the other. If a listing claims a faster chip, check its specification table โ R36 names are used loosely, and our clone guide shows how to confirm what you received.
The screen: bigger isn’t always bigger
The Max’s 4-inch panel is square. Most home consoles output a 4:3 picture, which fills the width of a square screen and leaves bars above and below. On a 4.0-inch square panel a 4:3 image measures about 3.54 inches diagonally โ practically the same as the R36S’s 3.5-inch screen. For SNES, Genesis and PlayStation 1 you gain very little.
Nintendo’s handhelds are a different story, because their screens are close to square. A Game Boy image (160ร144) fits at 4ร integer scaling (640ร576) on the Max but only 3ร (480ร432) on the R36S; a Game Boy Advance image (240ร160) fits at 3ร (720ร480) against 2ร (480ร320). Integer scaling keeps pixels sharp, so if your library leans towards Game Boy, GBA, Neo Geo Pocket or PICO-8, the Max shows those games visibly larger without blur.
Battery, size and controls
The Max’s 4,000 mAh battery is about 14% larger than the R36S’s 3,500 mAh. Expect a modestly longer session rather than a different class of battery life, since the larger panel uses some of the gain. The Max is also noticeably taller โ 153 mm against 130 mm โ which is comfortable on the sofa but less pocketable. Both have dual analog sticks and two microSD slots, and neither has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; if you want wireless features, look at the R36 Ultra.
Firmware
Both ship with ArkOS-based firmware and are supported by community firmware such as ROCKNIX. The R36S has the larger community simply because it has been around a year longer. Our setup guide and dArkOS guide cover flashing and first-time setup.
The verdict
Buy the R36 Max if most of what you play is Game Boy, Game Boy Color or GBA, or you want a little more battery and don’t mind a taller device. Buy the R36S if you mainly play SNES, Genesis or PlayStation 1 โ you get the same performance and practically the same picture size in a smaller body. Either way, check that the listing’s specifications match the model name before you order.

Frequently asked questions
Is the R36 Max faster than the R36S?
No. Both use the Rockchip RK3326 with a Mali-G31 GPU and 1 GB of RAM, so they run the same games at the same speed. Listings that call the Max faster are not supported by its specifications.
Is the R36 Max worth it over the R36S?
It is if you mostly play Game Boy, Game Boy Color or GBA, which scale larger on its square 720ร720 screen, or if you want a slightly bigger battery. For SNES, Genesis and PlayStation 1 it is not a meaningful upgrade.
Is the R36 Max screen really bigger?
Physically yes โ 4.0 inches against 3.5. But the Max's screen is square, so 4:3 console games appear at about 3.5 inches either way. Game Boy and GBA games do appear larger on the Max.
Does the R36 Max have Wi-Fi?
No. Neither the R36 Max nor the R36S has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The R36 Ultra is the R36-family model with wireless features.
Which has better battery life?
The R36 Max has a 4,000 mAh battery against 3,500 mAh on the R36S, so sessions run modestly longer, though the larger screen uses part of the difference.
