R36 Ultra Review: The Feature-Packed R36

Short answer: the R36 Ultra’s highlight is its excellent 4-inch 720×720 square IPS screen — one of the best in the budget class — backed by Wi-Fi, RetroAchievements support and USB-C charging. It is a capable classic-to-PS1 machine with a 4–6 hour battery. Just do not expect a big power jump: like much of the R36 range it is built on RK3326-class hardware, so N64, PSP and Dreamcast remain game-by-game. Based on published specs and owner reviews.

R36 Ultra key specs

Spec R36 Ultra
Screen 4.0″ IPS, 720×720 square (1:1)
Chip / RAM RK3326-class, 1GB DDR3L
Wireless Wi-Fi (RetroAchievements, netplay, updates)
Charging USB-C
Battery ~3,000 mAh (≈4–6 hrs)
Sweet spot NES, SNES, GBA, CPS1/2, PlayStation 1

The screen steals the show

The R36 Ultra’s 4-inch, 720×720, 1:1 square IPS display is genuinely one of its best features. The square aspect ratio suits Game Boy, GBA, Game Boy Advance and Neo Geo Pocket titles beautifully — they fill the panel natively without stretching — and colours are vibrant. In a sea of mediocre budget screens, this one stands out.

Performance: great for the classics

PlayStation 1, GBA, SNES, NES and CPS1/CPS2 arcade titles are the sweet spot and run well. Because the Ultra uses RK3326-class hardware rather than a dramatically faster chip, Nintendo 64, PSP and Dreamcast are playable on a game-by-game basis rather than a blanket promise. Set expectations there and you will be happy; buy it expecting flawless PSP and you will not.

Battery, Wi-Fi and USB-C

Battery life lands around 4–6 hours depending on system and brightness — lighter systems stretch further, PS1 and 3D pull it down. The built-in Wi-Fi is a real upgrade: it enables RetroAchievements, easier firmware updates and netplay. USB-C charging is a practical, welcome touch over the ageing Micro-USB still found on some cheap devices.

Pros

  • Excellent 4-inch 720×720 square IPS screen
  • Wi-Fi with RetroAchievements and netplay
  • USB-C charging
  • Strong for classic systems up to PS1

Cons

  • RK3326-class power — N64/PSP/Dreamcast are hit-or-miss
  • Square screen is divisive for widescreen content
  • Priced near the top of the budget bracket

Who should buy it

The R36 Ultra suits players who want the best screen and features in the R36 family and mainly play classics up to PlayStation 1. If you don’t need wireless features and want a bigger battery, the R36 Max is the alternative — it has the same square 720×720 screen — see our R36 Ultra vs R36S vs R36 Max comparison for the full breakdown.

The verdict

The R36 Ultra is one of the nicer budget handhelds to actually use, carried by a superb square screen and genuinely useful Wi-Fi. Just buy it for what it is — a great classic-to-PS1 machine — not for heavy 3D emulation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the R36 Ultra worth buying?

Yes, if you want the best screen and features in the R36 family and mainly play classics up to PlayStation 1. Its 4-inch 720×720 square IPS screen, Wi-Fi and USB-C are real strengths. It is less compelling if you need strong N64, PSP or Dreamcast performance.

What chip does the R36 Ultra use?

The R36 Ultra is built on RK3326-class hardware with 1GB of DDR3L RAM. Despite the "Ultra" name, it is not a dramatic power upgrade over other R36 models — its advantages are the screen, Wi-Fi and features rather than raw speed.

How is the R36 Ultra battery life?

Around 4–6 hours depending on the system and screen brightness. Lighter systems like NES and GBA last longer, while PlayStation 1 and 3D titles reduce it. It charges over USB-C.

R36 Ultra or R36 Max — which is better?

They share the same square 720×720 screen. The R36 Ultra adds Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and RetroAchievements; the R36 Max has no wireless but a bigger 4,000 mAh battery. See our R36 Ultra vs R36S vs R36 Max comparison to decide.
