Anbernic RG477M vs RG476H: Which Should You Buy?

Short answer: both share the same excellent 4.7-inch 1280×960 120Hz 4:3 display, but they are aimed at different buyers. The RG477M is Anbernic’s biggest, heaviest, most powerful metal handheld — a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 in a CNC aluminium shell. The RG476H is lighter, glass-fronted, and built around a less powerful Unisoc T820. Buy the RG477M for more emulation headroom and a premium metal build; buy the RG476H to save money and weight with the same great screen.

Same screen, different engines

Both devices share what is arguably Anbernic’s best screen yet — a 4.7-inch, 120Hz, true 4:3 LTPS panel at 1280×960. Where they split is the chip underneath. The RG477M’s MediaTek Dimensity 8300 gives it more consistent headroom for GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast. The RG476H’s Unisoc T820 handles Dreamcast and N64 well at 960p upscale and PSP at 3x upscale, but GameCube and PS2 stay closer to native 480p rather than upscaled — playable, but visibly more limited.

Build and weight

The RG477M is deliberately the biggest and heaviest device in Anbernic’s current lineup, with a CNC aluminium shell that feels premium but adds bulk. The RG476H trades some of that heft for a glass-fronted design under 300g — noticeably lighter and easier to hold for long sessions, at the cost of some performance ceiling.

The verdict

Buy the RG477M if GameCube, PS2 and Dreamcast performance matters and you do not mind a heavier, more premium metal shell. Buy the RG476H if you want the same fantastic screen in a lighter package, and PS1/N64/Dreamcast-tier emulation is your ceiling. Either is a strong step up from budget Linux handhelds.

Do you need either?

Both cost considerably more than a budget handheld. If your library is NES through PlayStation 1, the R36 Max covers that for a fraction of the price — see our Anbernic RG476H review for the full breakdown of what that premium buys you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the RG477M and RG476H?

They share the same excellent 4.7-inch 120Hz 4:3 screen, but the RG477M uses a more powerful MediaTek Dimensity 8300 in a heavier CNC aluminium shell, while the RG476H uses a less powerful Unisoc T820 in a lighter, glass-fronted design under 300g.

Which is better for GameCube and PS2?

The RG477M, thanks to its more powerful MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chip. The RG476H can run these systems but stays closer to native resolution rather than upscaling, making the RG477M the stronger choice for that specific use case.

Is the RG477M heavier than the RG476H?

Do both have Hall-effect joysticks?

Yes, both the RG477M and RG476H use Hall-effect joysticks, which resist the drift that affects standard analog sticks over time.
